Christmas Tree & Lights Buyer's Guide

With so many places to buy artificial Christmas Tree & Lights, it can be challenging to find the best ones for you. This guide will help you through the buying process, so that you can find the right tree and lights that you will be proud to display year after year.

1. What’s The Right Artificial Christmas Tree Size

Before buying a Christmas Tree, you should decide where you want to display the tree. Which room will it be in? Is it intended to be the centrepiece of a room? Or, is it a second tree that will go in a family room or guest room? Will you put it in a corner, along a specific wall or next to a doorway?

Now that you’ve determined the location for your tree, how much space are you looking to fill? This will help you determine the ideal Christmas Tree height for you. If you want the tallest Christmas tree your room allows, we recommend buying a tree that is at least six inches lower than your ceiling height. For example, most standard ceilings are 8 foot, so you should buy a 7½ FOOT TREE. This will allow some clearance to ensure that the tip of your Christmas tree will not hug your ceiling and will allow space for a tree topper.

In terms of floor space, measure the approximate diameter of the space you plan to reserve for the Christmas tree. As you shop for a Christmas tree, look for the varieties that will fill your space. We suggest that you consider the diameter of the Christmas tree, not the shape name, to help you pick your perfect tree. This measurement is taken at the very widest point of the tree; if you plan to have a few branches touching a wall or a piece of furniture, the true space occupied by the tree will be about six inches less than the stated diameter.

2. What does hinged branches mean?

Nearly all our trees sourced come with hinged branches. Hinged branches are easy to assemble, so you are not adding in each brand individually. Instead, the tree will usually come in two to four parts that you simply click into place one after the other, starting at the base. The branches are packaged upright, and they simply fall down into place once opened up. From here, you simply fluff up the branches to your taste and to achieve the best look.

3. What is the difference between LED lights versus traditional fairy lights?

Traditional fairy lights are almost a thing of the past. Why? The main reason is LED lights are vastly superior in every way. The quality versions we use from Premier and Lumineo have virtually unbreakable bulbs. The wires don’t tangle like fairy lights and best of all, choosing our LED lights will be cost effective and energy efficient as they use 90% less energy than standard bulbs. It is recommended from Electric Ireland to switch to LED’s to save annually on your electricity costs, and who wants a big bill in January?

4. Do you sell indoor and outdoor lights separately?

Go to our lights section, and you will find Outdoor/Indoor Lights together in one section. This is because all our LED lights are suitable for indoors AND outdoors. The outside of your home can become a Christmas grotto with our large choice of colours, shapes, and sizes on many types of lights. Plus, many of our lights have lengthy lead cables so that they can reach your indoor plugs, so no need to worry about where your lights can go. We recommend that if you are putting them outdoors and the plug will be outside too, use a weather box to protect from moisture and frost getting into the plug. If you want to avoid the hassle of plugs, choose Battery Operated Lights. These work outdoors too. These look fantastic for lighting up hedging and other hard to reach areas of your garden, but please remember where you left the battery box. You don’t want to be like me last year, routing around a wet hedge in the dark trying to find the battery box to replace them. Quality batteries should last 30 days in our energy efficient Battery Operated Lights sets.

5. What is the correct amount of lights to buy for my tree?

Obviously, individual taste will play a large part in this. Do you want to have a well lit tree or is your tree getting enough natural light, and you want to go bigger on Christmas Tree Decorations. Also, the type of set will play an important role. Premier Treebrights, Lumineo Compact Lights and Cluster Lights really deliver a stunning visual and a well lit tree with the bulbs close together. This will mean though you need more bulbs for your tree versus the traditional types like our Supabrights or battery operated sets.
